Modelling Situation Awareness Information for Naval Decision Support Design

چکیده
In nowadays complex and dynamic changing military environments supporting Situation Awareness (SA) of operators is a prerequisite for situationand task-adequate decision making and action accomplishment. SA refers to information on three levels which represent relevant elements of the operator environment, element patterns describing complex mission situations, and projections of future states and dynamics of elements. A means for supporting SA of operators are adaptive knowledge-based user interfaces. For developing such interfaces information of the three different SA levels which operators need in performing their tasks have to be specified and modelled. One source from which that information can be acquired are scenarios which have to be developed in any case for system design as well as for operator training. For specifying relevant SA information a model of the problem domain has been developed which comprises the True World of scenarios, the Sensed World of detected tracks, and the Deduced World of concluded track information. To uniformly describe these different worlds an object oriented approach has been applied which is based on static and dynamic scenario and track objects which are specified mathematically. Attributes and operations of track objects constitute elements and patterns of relevant SA information to be identified. Additionally, the described mathematical model of track objects constitutes the basis for developing a software specification with the object-oriented Unified Modelling Language UML. Using a Navy Anti-Air Warfare scenario as an example the application of the developed modelling approach is demonstrated in detail.

Modelling situation awareness for Context-aware Decision Support
Situation awareness modelling is popularly used in the command and control domain for situation assessment and decision support. However, situation models in real-world applications are typically complex and not easy to use. This paper presents a Context-aware Decision Support (CaDS) system, which consists of a situation model for shared situation awareness modelling and a group of entity agent...

This paper maps the three levels of Situation Awareness (i.e. perception, comprehension and projection) in maritime navigation to the different watchkeepers's roles (Look-Outs, Radar/Navigation Specialist and Officer-Of-the-Watch) inside the bridge of a naval vessel. It can be shown that the Maritime Collision Detection and Advisory System (MCDAS) complement these roles by operating as a data p...
متن کامل"Task-Managed" Watchstanding: Providing Decision Support for Multi-Task Naval Operations
Watchstanding in shipboard command centers requires U.S. Navy crews to complete timecritical and externally paced task assignments in an accurate and timely manner. Requirements for optimized crew sizes in future ships are driving system designers toward human–computer interface designs that mitigate task and workload demands in a multi-task work environment. The multi-task mission is character...

The U.S. Navy is currently developing its next-generation cruise missile, the Tactical Tomahawk, which improves upon current versions by its ability to be retargetedin flight against emergent time-critical targets. In this study, we developed an advanced operator interfaceprototype for monitoring, controlling and retargeting the Tactical Tomahawk missile and empirically tested the effect of mis...
